If you have finally succumbed and accept that the time has come for some home renovation, lighting is a critical aspect to take onboard. Light is everywhere and it can be easily manipulated, which is the goal of interior illumination and with that in mind, here are a few common lighting mistakes to avoid when decorating your home.
- Ignore colour – There are 3 main colours where lighting is concerned; namely warm, neutral and cool. Each invokes a different ambience and when combined correctly, you can create a warm and inviting glow. Those awesome brass ceiling lights at lights&lamps would be perfect for your living room, with warm light to create a cosy feeling, while the kitchen should have cool light, which is bluey-white and has an energy with it.
- High wattage – A bright LED without a shade is too clinical; floor level dull spots are a good way to illuminate hallways and corridors, replace all your incandescent lightbulbs with low watt LED lights, which saves energy.
- No layering – Layering light adds depth to a space, rather than having a single light source, have several at different heights and angles; layering makes good use of general, task and accent lighting, which can be combined. Google Images can find some amazing light set ups to give you some much-needed inspiration and experimentation is the name of the game.
- No accent lighting – There’s not much point in having a statement piece if it isn’t highlighted. LED spots come in a range of sizes and styles; showcase that fabulous oil painting and stress the walnut writing desk, which can also be task lighting. Turn off the accent lighting and you’ll notice the difference and have an open mind when it comes to light fittings.
- No imagination – A strong ceiling light would illuminate the entire room and for some, that is good enough; an interior designer would weep if they saw such a set up, with the room having so much potential. Get creative, visit a light fitting store and check out the textures, colours and styles and you might surprise yourself.
Lighting is an integral part of a balanced look and we hope this short blog helps you avoid the above mentioned blunders.
