After a hectic week, are you feeling a bit scattered? Do you feel as though your motivation has diminished? We hear you. The daily grind, the never-ending list of things to do, and, let’s face it, the worry about the old hip pocket can make us feel like we have no energy left.
A Self-Care Sunday is great because it gives you a set day, or even just a few hours, to recharge, treat yourself, and remind yourself that you earn it. That’s the best thing about it. Spending a significant amount of money is not necessary to feel like a millionaire. Let’s curl up with a cup of coffee and talk about five wonderful ways to spoil yourself without going broke.
1. Make Your Own Escape Spa at Home
Forget about those hot day spa deals for a moment. You can make a very happy spa experience right in your home with things you may already have or can get for a low price.
Setting the mood is the first step. Turn down the lights, light some scented candles (lavender for relaxation or citrous to wake you up), and put on some relaxing music, like calming acoustic songs or even peaceful nature sounds.
Next, run a warm bath. It shouldn’t just be any old bath, though. Change it!
- If you want to get fancy, Chuck could have a bath bomb or a big handful of Epsom salts, which are great for sore muscles and surprisingly cheap at the store or pharmacy.
- With a few drops of your favourite essential oils, your tub can also smell like a tropical paradise.
- While you soak, why not make a face mask and use it on your skin? It goes well with plain honey and oats or yoghurt with a squeeze of lemon.
Close your eyes, lie down, and let the warm music on this Australian-made mix take away your stress. Friend, pure joy!
2. Show Your Tresses Some Love and Care
The main factors that damage our hair are the strong Australian sun, styling products, and possibly excessive use of dry shampoo (we’ve all been there!). A Self-Care Sunday is the perfect time to give your hair the attention it deserves. You can get beautiful, healthy-looking hair without spending a lot of money on salon services.
First wash gently, then wash well. So, let’s use a mask that will feed your skin. You can find affordable hair treatment products at your local grocery store or pharmacy. Look for ingredients like shea butter, argan oil, or coconut oil. Alternatively, you can experiment independently. Adding a tablespoon of olive oil to mashed avocado is a standard that works every time. Put it on, cover it with a shower cap (or cling film if you’re feeling creative!), and let it work for twenty to thirty minutes. Right now is a great time to listen to that podcast or get lost in a good book.
After you’ve cleaned everything, use a gentler method instead of boiling water. If you have a small hair dryer, dry your hair on low heat. If you have time, I think it’s better to let it air dry. The break and extra food will make your hair feel softer, shinier, and so much more comfortable to touch.
3. Spending Less on Self-Care and Creative Getaways
While taking care of your body is important, it is equally essential to take care of your mind. And occasionally the best ways to clear your mind are ones that don’t cost anything.
You could set aside some time on Sunday to be aware. Being able to meditate for hours on end doesn’t mean you have to (unless that’s your thing, of course!). It might only take ten minutes of focused breathing in a quiet place, like a park, or a picture that makes you feel positive. There are also a lot of free guided meditation apps you can use if you need some help.
Writing in a book is another excellent and cheap way to sort your thoughts and feelings. You don’t need a fancy, leather-bound book to write. Just get a notebook and pen. Don’t judge your thoughts as you come up with them. What comes out might surprise you!
You could also lose yourself in a captivating book. Your local library offers a wealth of free entertainment, knowledge, and a chance to escape. Instead, show off your artsy side. Get out your old sketchbook and try painting with watercolors…basic sets are very cheap. You could also knit, crochet, or even draw on purpose. Being creative is a wonderful way to relieve stress and improve your happiness.
4. A Culinary Hug: Bake or Cook Something Delicious
There’s something very relaxing and enjoyable about making great food for yourself. Instead of getting expensive takeout, use your Self-Care Sunday to make a special meal or bake a sweet treat. You don’t just have to eat; cooking or baking can also be very mindful and satisfying.
Consider what truly satisfies your palate. Is it a slow-cooked, hearty stew that exudes a delightful aroma? Is it a vibrant, fresh salad packed with seasonal Australian vegetables? You could also make a traditional lamington or some warm, gooey chocolate chip cookies. Pick a recipe that you’ll enjoy making instead of one that looks like a lot of work.
Put on your favourite dress, like your comfortable Marle Dress, play some music, and enjoy the process of cutting, stirring, and creating something new. You will have a great home-cooked meal or treat that was made with love by you, for you. And cooking at home is usually a lot cheaper than going out to eat or getting takeout.
5. Step Back into Nature (For Free!)
We live in Australia, which has some of the most beautiful natural settings on Earth. Often, these places are right outside our door and are free to visit. Meeting people in nature is a wonderful way to unwind, clear your mind, and feel better in general.
Perhaps you might consider stepping outside on Self-Care Sunday. Take a slow stroll through the park near your home. If you’re brave enough, walk barefoot on the grass and listen to the birds. Then, just let the environment wash over you. If you live near the coast, a walk along the beach with the sand between your toes and the sea breeze on your face will quickly make you feel better. Even in cities, parks or gardens are often nearby to escape the noise.
You don’t have to go somewhere specific or bring special camping gear. As long as you go outside, breathe in fresh air, and enjoy the beauty of nature, your soul will be much better. Leave your phone in your pocket for a short time and just be in the present. Wonderfully, the universe tells us that sometimes the best things in life are free.
Here are five great ideas that won’t break the bank and will make your Self-Care Sundays unforgettable. Remember that taking care of yourself is not a luxury, especially now when life is so busy. It’s about intentionally carving out time for yourself, replenishing your energy, and acknowledging your worth. So go ahead and give yourself a little treat on Sunday. You really do deserve it!
